Lucas Leiva back in training ahead of Manchester United match

by Richard Laverty

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has returned to full training four days before he and his team mates face Manchester United at Anfield.

Whilst any game between United and Liverpool has a lot resting on it, this is the first time the clubs have met since arguably 2009 where there is a lot riding on it for both side other than pride.

Lucas was in and out of the Liverpool team at the start of the season but played in the reverse fixture in December when Louis van Gaal‘s side were 3-0 winners.

His return will be a boost to Brendan Rodgers and adds another string to the bow of the league’s form team, similar to the pattern of last season when Liverpool came good in the second half of the season.

However, with Steven Gerrard even struggling to gain a regular starting berth, it might be a shock to see Lucas walk straight back into the team given the form of Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen.

The key decisions for Rodgers on Sunday come at wing-back. He has successfully implemented a similar system to what Van Gaal tried earlier in the season and the likes of Sterling, Markovic, Moreno, Lallana and Jordon Ibe have all played on the wing this season.

With United likely to deploy wingers in Angel Di Maria and Ashley Young, United’s ability to stifle Liverpool’s play out wide could be crucial to the result.
