Owen Hargreaves: Angel di Maria must start against Liverpool

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes Angel di Maria should return to the starting XI to face Liverpool this weekend despite his tough run of form.

Di Maria has endured a tough time of late having been substituted early in Man United’s recent games against Sunderland and Newcastle United.

Against Arsenal in the FA Cup earlier this month, Di Maria was sent off which meant he missed United’s superb 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

His replacement, Juan Mata, put in an excellent shift against Spurs but Hargeaves still thinks Di Maria should go straight back into the side to face Liverpool.

Speaking about the Argentine, Hargreaves said: “I think Di Maria walks back into the side when he is healthy, I think he has to.

“He is a superior player to a Fellaini, to a Mata, to a Herrera, so I think he has to play. He has to play off the right, like he does for Argentina, and drift inside.”

Di Maria is going through a time tough time at United but he undoubtedly has the talent to change the game at Anfield.

Ultimately, Louis van Gaal has to decide if he believes in Di Maria’s class or whether he wants to stick with the form player in Mata. It will be a crucial decision, as the game against Liverpool will have a big impact in the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League.
