Robin van Persie steps up recovery from ankle injury

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that Robin van Persie has started running as he continues his return from an ankle injury.

Van Persie has been out of action since picking up the injury in Man United’s 2-1 loss to Swansea in February.

Reports suggested the Dutchman would be out for up to six weeks but it appears that van Persie is ahead of schedule in his recovery.

When news broke of van Persie’s absence, many fans thought it might be a blessing in disguise for United as he had produced a number of poor performances.

As it panned out, Wayne Rooney was moved back up front after spending a number of weeks in midfield and the United captain has gone on to flourish in the role.

Rooney’s strike capped a 3-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and the 29-year-old has scored five goals in six games.

His form will give van Gaal a decision to make when van Persie returns to full fitness. On the one hand, United have looked much better with Rooney up front as it allows Ander Herrera to pull the strings in midfield. On the other, van Gaal appears to like van Persie as they worked together with the Dutch national team.
