Juan Mata: Liverpool performance was my best for Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata believes his performance in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday was the best of his Old Trafford career.

Mata was superb at Anfield and scored a memorable brace to secure a crucial three points for Louis van Gaal’s side.

The Spaniard opened the scoring with a neat finish following Ander Herrera’s through ball before adding a second with a magnificent volley.

It was a fantastic performance from Mata and one that the player himself rates as his best at United:

Speaking about his display, Mata said: ”I think it’s my best game in a United shirt, yes. It’s a massive game, probably the biggest in English football, so to score two goals is great for me.

“The second goal has to be up there with my best. After Steven Gerrard was sent off we needed a second goal because they pushed us to the end.

“It was important for me. The last few months I’ve not had the best moment. It is the manager who decides but I’m happy today.”

Diego Forlan etched himself into United folklore with a brace against Liverpool in 2002 and the fans still chant about it to this day.

Mata’s fantastic performance will also live long in the memory. Meanwhile, the icing on the cake for fans was a red card for Steven Gerrard 38 seconds after coming on as a half-time substitute. It was a perfect afternoon at Anfield and one that the team will draw heaps of confidence from.
