Liverpool v Manchester United: Team line-ups – Juan Mata starts

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United: De Gea, Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Blind, Carrick, Herrera, Mata, Fellaini, Young, Rooney

Subs: Valdes, Rafael, Rojo, Di Maria, Januzaj, A Pereira, Falcao

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has named an unchanged side to the one that comfortably beat Tottenham Hotspur last weekend for this afternoon’s clash with Liverpool.

Juan Mata retains his place in midfield, with Angel di Maria dropping to the substitute’s bench despite his return from suspension.

Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera continue in midfield behind Marouane Fellaini, who will operate in the hole.

Van Gaal has given himself plenty of options on the bench, with Di Maria, Rafael, Marcos Rojo, Adnan Januzaj and Radamel Falcao all included.

Andreas Pereira is also handed a spot in the matchday squad, although it is unlikely that fans will see the Belgian in a game of such importance. After a good performance against Spurs, it is a sensible team from van Gaal. However, he will be hoping he doesn’t rue his decision to omit Di Maria’s pace on the counter attack.
