Jamie Carragher was delighted when he saw Steven Gerrard coming on as a half-time substitution for Liverpool. That delight lasted for approximately 43 seconds.
Not long after the whistle was down from Martin Atkinson’s lips to get the second half started, Gerrard inexplicably decided to stamp on Ander Herrera and was deservedly shown a straight red card.
For a player who has bags of experience, it was a ridiculous moment where he was caught up in the emotions of the day and it gave United the advantage.
United fans certainly played their part in getting Gerrard’s blood boiling as they were in loud voice all day and gave him a special rendition of a chant as he was warming up on the sidelines before coming on:
