Man United’s training groups could indicate Liverpool selection

Manchester United’s team selection is always one of the main talking points in a build up to a game and that’s the case ahead of Sunday’s game against Liverpool.

Will Angel di Maria return to the starting XI over Juan Mata? Will Rafael be chosen ahead of Antonio Valencia? There are plenty of variables but taking a look at pictures from training might give a clue as to what Louis van Gaal has got planned for Anfield.

At one point during training on Friday, the players were separated into different groups. Juan Mata, Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Wayne Rooney, Phil Jones and Marouane Fellaini were to one side in a group.

The likes of Jonny Evans, Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Tyler Blackett trained were having a discussion in a separate group.

Given that Evans is suspended on Sunday, it could be that he was training with the substitutes alongside Di Maria and Falcao, with Mata in the other group alongside Rooney who is certain to start.

Of course, we may simply be looking into it too much but with such a big game ahead, there is understandably some real spotlight on what team van Gaal chooses as it will dictate how United play, especially when it comes to who starts out of Mata an Di Maria.
