Paul Pogba emerges as Louis van Gaal’s primary transfer target – report

by Sam Peoples

Paul Pogba has emerged as Louis van Gaal‘s primary transfer target this summer, reports Jason Burt from The Telegraph.

Since leaving Manchester United on a free transfer, the 22-year-old French midfielder has become one of the best midfielders in world football and is only continuing to get better with each passing season.

Van Gaal spent £150m last summer but is expected to have another blockbuster transfer window and Burt suggests a right-sided ‘ball carrying’ defender, a right-back and a new striker are also on his list of desires.

Jason was responsible for breaking the story of Juan Mata‘s impending move to Man United before any other newspaper had covered it, so his sources at the club have previously been very strong.

While Ander Herrera and Daley Blind were both excellent signings, neither are an archetypal box-to-box midfielder which van Gaal is after, so it’s no surprise to see the links with Pogba continuing to grow in strength.

It would be a bitter pill to swallow for United to spend £60m on a player they let go on a free only a few years ago but it is money that would otherwise line the Glazers’ pockets, so fans would be much happier seeing that spent on a player who could, and would, dramatically improve the team.

As for players in the other positions mentioned by Burt, none of them come as much of a surprise either as all are in need of being strengthened.

Last year was an unprecedented summer of spending for United and it is all shaping up to be very similar this time around.
