The two midfielders were key to United recording a crucial and memorable win at Anfield. Mata himself scored a brace that that set up the 2-1 victory to take the team five points clear of Liverpool in fourth place.
Mata came into the team last week against Tottenham to replace the suspended Angel Di Maria and was a revelation given it was his first start in over a month. Playing from the right, Mata caused Spurs all sorts of issues and despite Di Maria’s return on Sunday, hw kept his place in the team.
He was set up by Herrera for his first before Di Maria played a lovely ball over the top of the Liverpool defence in the second half which Mata acrobatically volleyed into the far corner right in front of United’s travelling support.

Herrera himself has impressed lately with a run of games in a midfield three. Against Spurs, he and Mata made United tick and his through ball to find his fellow Spaniard on Sunday was as precise as it could possibly have been and it gave United the lead.
They deserve all the plaudits they get because they have been integral in United’s surge towards the top four spots, so it’s great to see them named in WhoScored’s Team of the Week.
Both players are out of the Spain squad and will be fresh and fit to face Aston Villa when United return to action in a fortnight at Old Trafford.
