The relationship between Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and the rest of Manchester United’s Spanish contingent has captured the hearts of supporters since the summer but even Herrera was shocked to see Mata’s overhead kick fly in against Liverpool.
In a game where the pairing once again not only showed their class but that they are both better players when playing together, the man signed last summer from Athletic Bilbao played a pinpoint ball for Mata to score the opener.
Whilst Mata’s second goal didn’t even turn out to be the major talking point of the game, it was memorable for the United supporters who had a perfect view of it flying past Simon Mignolet to give United a 2-0 lead at Anfield.
Despite their friendship and telepathy on the pitch, even Herrera appeared shocked to see Mata pull off such an effort, just like every United fan was.
Herrera’s reaction encapsulated just what an amazing afternoon it was for the club. Not only did they record a surprise and rare away win against Liverpool, it solidified their position in the top four whereas a defeat would have seen them drop behind Liverpool and it was topped off by seeing Steven Gerrard sent off 41 seconds into his final North West derby.
The Spanish duo were both key to United’s victory in different ways at Anfield and it appears for now they are both nailed on to remain in the first eleven for the foreseeable future.
