Wayne Rooney display frustrates Manchester United supporters

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has historically always struggled at Anfield against Liverpool and Sunday’s clash between the two sides was no different.

A passenger during the 2-1 win, Rooney continued his run of not scoring away at Liverpool since the 2004/05 season.

His misery was compounded in the dying moments of the game when United were awarded a penalty following Emre Can’s clumsy challenge on Daley Blind. Instead of giving the ball to Juan Mata, who was on a hat-trick, Rooney elected to take the spot kick himself but his effort was saved by Simon Mignolet.

On another day, Rooney would have taken the brunt of abuse from his own supporters but given the magnitude of the win, some fans were lenient and others plainly didn’t care:

The captain was at his influential best last week as United overcame Tottenham in a 3-0 win and can be forgiven for a poor display after a drastic upturn in form.

With an international break now coming up, supporters will hope Rooney and co come out the other end fit and ready for another big run of fixtures including the Manchester derby and a trip to Chelsea.
