Juan Mata‘s performance against Liverpool on Sunday not only earned him in a place in WhoScored’s Premier League Team of the Week but also their European best XI from last weekend.
It’s praise and recognition which Mata richly deserves because he stole the show at Anfield and it wasn’t simply because he scored two goals as his influence was far greater all over the pitch.
Along with Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera in the heart of midfield, Mata was a danger even without the ball as his movement was spot on. It’s certainly one area of his game he could have been criticised for earlier this season but he has vastly improved in recent performances.
Of course, it was goals which made the difference against Liverpool and although his acrobatic, technically superb overhead will steal the headlines, his opening goal was a wonderful finish as well with a first timed finish on his right foot to the opposite corner.
Mata was already a hit with United fans prior to his match winning performance at Anfield because of his genuine nature both on and off the field but after what he did against Liverpool, he’ll forever be remembered at the club long after he leaves.
