Phil Neville feels David de Gea is waiting to see whether or not Manchester United qualify for the Champions League before making a decision on his future.
Real Madrid have been strongly linked with a move for De Gea, who has been Man United’s standout player this season.
The Spaniard is nearing the end of his contract but has so far refused to sign a new deal. A number of factors are rumoured to be behind his reluctance to commit to United such as his girlfriend and life in Manchester.
However, Neville has said De Gea is simply waiting to see if United spend another year out of Europe’s elite competition.
Speaking about the 24-year-old’s future, Neville said: ”In terms of De Gea I think the thing he’s waiting for is to see if United qualify for the Champions League.
“It s a big deal for footballers nowadays, it certainly is for players at United who want to play at the top level.
“So for David, who is one of the best keepers in world football at the moment, playing Champions League football is key to him and if United can qualify for the Champion League I think you’ll see De Gea stay at Old Trafford.”
United went a long way to securing a Champions League spot for next season by beating Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield last weekend.
If Louis van Gaal’s side beat Aston Villa in their next game and Arsenal beat Liverpool, they could establish an eight point gap over their rivals in the race for the top four. Of course, there is still a lot of football to be played and anything could happen but United would certainly be in a good position should the two results come off.
