Watch: Ander Herrera’s performance against Liverpool

by Ben Topliss

Ander Herrera is a quality player. Who would have thought it?

This much is clear to fans but the Manchester United midfielder was initially frozen out by Louis van Gaal during the first half of the season, potentially because he took too many risks.

Instead, van Gaal chose to play Wayne Rooney in the middle of the park for a number of weeks despite some increasingly ineffectual performances.

An injury to Robin van Persie eventually meant Rooney was moved back up front, allowing Herrera to flourish once he had a regular spot in midfield.

Against Liverpool last weekend, the Spaniard ran the show along with Michael Carrick. Showcasing an excellent range of passing, Herrera was instrumental in the victory and provided the assist for Juan Mata’s opening goal.

Louis van Gaal is a highly demanding manager who has shown he cares little for price tags or reputation when it comes to his team selection.

Herrera isn’t the only one who has had to warm the bench this term with Radamel Falcao, Angel di Maria and Juan Mata all spending time on the sidelines. Instead of moaning about the situation, Herrera has kept his head down, worked hard and rightly deserves his place in the starting XI.

Now, he has made himself indispensable and a crucial part of United’s midfield trio alongside Carrick and Mata which has proved so effective against Tottenham and Liverpool.
