Juan Mata named Manchester United’s Player of the Month

by Ben Topliss

Juan Mata has been named as Manchester United’s Player of the Month for March following a pair of superb performances against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Against Spurs, Mata received a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd as he played a key part in Man United’s 3-0 victory.

The Spaniard followed that by scoring a memorable brace during a 2-1 win at Anfield as United sealed a crucial three points against their top four rivals.

His second, an acrobatic volley, was one of the most memorable goals in United’s recent history.

Mata was crowned the victor of the fan voted poll after winning 51% of the votes. Marouane Fellaini came second with 33% while Wayne Rooney claimed 16%.

Mata’s Old Trafford career has been stop start since he joined the club from Chelsea last season but his performance against Liverpool was undoubtedly his best for United.

The 26-year-old’s form means Louis van Gaal will have to think long and hard about his team selection when his players return from international duty. It appears van Gaal will have to choose between Mata and Angel di Maria for a spot in the starting XI, but on this form it may be impossible to leave Mata out.
