Juan Mata’s second goal against Liverpool last weekend was one of the best Manchester United strikes in recent memory, let alone this month, so it is no surprise to see it in the Goal of the Month nominations for March.
After adjusting his body position following an Angel di Maria pass, Mata acrobatically volleyed in past Simon Mignolet to double United’s advantage at Anfield before the team secured a 2-1 win.
Considering the setting, the importance of the game and the goal itself, it was a strike which will live long in the memory.
At the time of writing, Mata’s effort has 91% of fans’ votes, with Rooney’s solo effort against Tottenham Hotspur and Ashley Young’s late winner against Newcastle United each receiving 2%.
Unless there are 4000 United fans who actually preferred Paddy McNair’s goal with the U21s, Mata will be end up as a runaway winner in the poll.
The Spaniard has really turned things around in recent weeks and thoroughly deserves all the recognition he is getting.
Di Maria could certainly learn a thing or two from him as Mata has worked hard and kept quiet during a difficult period. The 26-year-old has not been picked for Spain’s squad during the international break so will be fresh and ready to go when United face Aston Villa in their next game.
