The U19s took part in a special Nike Academy Cup at England’s training ground St. George’s Park and Pereira got on the score sheet with Man United’s opening goal.
Having been left out of Belgium’s squad, it was a great opportunity for Januzaj to get some more competitive game time and the same can be said for Pereira, who will take some confidence from scoring.
Time and time again this season, Louis van Gaal has shown he is not afraid to ask his first-team players to take a step down with the younger teams and that has been the case once again for Januzaj and Pereira.
It’s not as extreme an example as Radamel Falcao playing with the U21s but nevertheless it’s another testament to his belief that regular football is the most important thing for players, regardless of the level.
Looking ahead to next weekend’s game against Aston Villa, van Gaal will want to have as many players as possible match fit. Two wins on the bounce over Spurs and Liverpool have been fantastic results but that good work will be wasted if United can’t secure three points over Villa.
