Marc Wilmots has explained the reasoning behind his decision to drop Adnan Januzaj from the Belgium squad this week was simply down to a lack of game time.
The 19-year-old has had to fight for places in a competitive Manchester United squad and as such has had to settle for a place on the bench a lot of the time.
Juan Mata‘s resurgent form has made it even more difficult for him to get into the team and although Wilmots wants Januzaj to be playing more, he has every faith in his qualities as a player.
“I have no doubt about his qualities,” Wilmots said after Belgium’s 5-0 win over Cyprus .
“But he only has few opportunities to show his qualities. I must stay correct with the other players. Players like Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco, Dries Mertens and Nacer Chadli are starters at their club.
“The competition for this position is very high. The only reason he is not here is that he plays too little. It’s a decision I make now. Maybe in two months it’s another story.”
It’s been an eye opening year for Januzaj. He’s come to earth after the highs of his break through season under David Moyes and had to deal with plenty of frustration but he’s done it well.
All Januzaj can do is knuckle down and continue to fight for chances. Louis van Gaal has shown faith in him at certain points this season and he’ll get more chances again when the time is right.
