Despite his outstanding form for Manchester United, Vicente del Bosque chose not to start David de Gea in Spain’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Ukraine last week and instead gave Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas the no.1 spot.
So ahead of Spain’s glamour friendly against the Netherlands tonight, De Gea is waiting in the wings, ready for the call from Del Bosque that he is in the starting XI.
Spanish newspaper AS say De Gea will start tonight and be taken off at half-time for Sergio Asenjo.
All Man United bias aside, there’s no way Casillas should have been chosen ahead of De Gea for the Ukraine match but Del Bosque’s longstanding loyalty to Casillas remains very strong.
It’s inevitable the Madrid shot-stopper will be replaced by De Gea so it’s simply a case of when it will happen rather than if. Hopefully De Gea can once again show tonight why that should be as soon as possible.
