Netherlands manager Guus Hiddink wants Manchester United’s Daley Blind to become the “captain” of his midfield.
Blind has enjoyed a fine run of form in recent weeks, playing a starring role at left-back in the victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.
The 25-year-old moved back into his usual midfield role for the Netherlands over the international break and helped his side record a 2-0 victory over Spain on Tuesday night.
Hiddink believes Blind is developing into a crucial part of the Netherlands side.
Speaking about Blind, Hiddink said: “He is developing into a leader. That’s what I told him. He must be the captain of our midfield.”
Although United signed the likes of Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao last summer, Blind has emerged as arguably the most important signing of the season.
His impact on a game isn’t immediately noticeable but Blind goes about his job in an effective and confident manner. His versatility has also proved to be a crucial aspect of his play this term, as the games against Spurs and Liverpool have shown.
