During a defensive injury crisis earlier this season, McNair started consecutive games against West Ham and Everton and earned plenty of praise for his performances.
As the season progressed, he was in and out of United’s starting XI but did enough to earn himself a new contract and looking ahead to the rest of the year, the 19-year-old old made it clear he is keen to play more first-team football.
“I’ve got loads of friends in the Under-21s,” McNair told MUTV. “They are doing really well and it was good to get some match fitness with them.
“Every day I’m coming in and trying to and impress the manager and all his staff. Hopefully I can get as many games as I can towards the end of the season. I’m training with world class players every day – that’s only going to make me better.”
McNair faces a tough challenge getting back into the team with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo firmly ahead of him in the pecking order but he already has his new contract so can look forward to next year.
His big opportunity will come during the pre-season. If McNair can really impress van Gaal there then he’ll have a great chance of breaking into the first-team on a regular basis next year.
