Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp is expecting a comfortable Manchester United win over Aston Villa today and backed Wayne Rooney to shine.
Following convincing wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, Man United head into the game in a confident mood.
Redknapp didn’t back United to win at Anfield but to be fair neither did most fans and looking forward to this weekend’s game against Villa, Redknapp expects it be a comfortable and dominant win for Louis van Gaal‘s side, spearheaded by Wayne Rooney.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp said: “United have really hit some form. I didn’t expect them or tip them to beat Liverpool and it surprised everybody with the way they played.
“They dominated the fixture from start to finish and I was really impressed with the intensity they played at, they passed the ball really well and tactically they were fantastic.
“I’m expecting them to beat a Villa side that have had some good results under Tim Sherwood but the last one was a really poor one. I’m going to go for a 3-1 win to United.
“I was looking at the players and there are so many different options for goals but the man I always turn to is Wayne Rooney in these moments.
“He’s such an important player for them, capable of scoring and making goals, so I’m going to go for a Rooney first goal.
“A few weeks ago, those top four ambitions this year looked like they might be dwindling but they are right back in it now and I’m expecting them to get the top four.”
As usual, Rooney’s performance at Anfield underwhelmed and it was typified by his penalty miss but against Tottenham the previous week he was in top form.
Rooney has led by example a lot of the time this season and although there are very few occasions when Redknapp is right, he’s correct in that Rooney is one of United’s most important players.
