Angel Di Maria recorded his 10th assist of the Premier League season for Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, meaning he closed in further on David Beckham’s club record of 15 for a single season.
Given Di Maria has largely failed to live up to his £59.7m price tag despite three goals in his opening month at Old Trafford, the statistic is impressive and a reminder of his quality.
The Argentinian got his first goal on his Old Trafford debut before further strikes against Leicester and Everton forced people into believing Di Maria would have no issues settling into life in England.
But Di Maria hasn’t scored a league goal since. A combination of injuries over Christmas and a burglary which clearly rattled both him and his family saw the winger’s performances dip.
Despite that, Di Maria was lively in the 1-0 win against Newcastle and appeared to be returning to form with a superb assist in the FA Cup against Arsenal. However, a red card saw Di Maria ruled out of the Tottenham game and the fact it was United’s best performance of the season cost him.
That means Di Maria sits on ten for the season, just five behind Beckham and he is starting to catch Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas for the most assists in the league this season.
Whilst not hitting top form, it’s a timely reminder to both Louis van Gaal and supporters that Di Maria is a top quality player who still has a huge future at Old Trafford.
