Louis van Gaal: David de Gea contract decision not dependent on Champions League qualification

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes David de Gea’s potential exit from the club is not dependent on Champions League qualification.

De Gea, who is nearing the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid this season.

Some reports over the international break suggested the Spaniard is waiting to see if Man United qualify for Europe’s elite competition before making a decision on his future.

Van Gaal was non-committal on the subject but hinted the Champions League will not be in De Gea’s thinking when he decides where his future lies.

Speaking about the report, van Gaal said: “I don’t think you have to ask that question to me. You have to ask David De Gea.

“We have a number of very good players. All the national coaches are confirming that because they are asking the players of ours.

“I don’t think that’s the problem.”

It would make sense for De Gea to wait and see if United do make it into the Champions League as a player of his quality should not miss out on the competition two years in a row.

If it is down to that, fans will be encouraged about the good position United have put themselves in as they go about their aim of finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
