Ander Herrera: I want to stay at Man United for many years to come

by Richard Laverty

Ander Herrera has increased his ever-growing popularity among Manchester United fans by stating he wants to stay at Old Trafford beyond the length of his contract.

The former Athletic Club midfielder sealed a four-year deal to join the club last summer and previously spoke last month about the wish to stay for at least five years.

The news will be music to the ears of supporters who have taken Herrera’s style of play, goals from midfield and tenacity throughout his game to their hearts this season and campaigned for him to be in the side during a two month hiatus from the starting line-up.

United have already reaped the rewards of making Herrera a regular starter, winning their last five Premier League games and almost certainly ensuring a return to the Champions League for next season.

The 25-year-old is currently the man of the moment after two goals against Aston Villa and he says he is completely happy at Old Trafford, even when he’s not playing.

“I’m very happy,” he enthused. “Even when I was not playing, I was also happy. I am at Manchester United. I feel really lucky to be here. The manager has to decide who is playing or not but we have to respect always the decision he makes. The manager wants the best for the team, the best for us and we have to follow him always.

“When I signed for Manchester United, I was thinking of players like Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney, Antonio Valencia, Rafael da Silva and, although he is not here now, Darren Fletcher. These are people who have been playing for a long time for United. It’s my dream to be here for a long time because I am in the right team, in the right league and in the right country. I feel very happy and I want to stay at the club for many years to come.”

Alongside Marouane Fellaini and Carrick, Herrera has become a key part of a three man midfield at United that looks like it is here to stay.
