Phil Neville believes Juan Mata‘s versatility as a footballer has acted as a hindrance to his progress at Manchester United.
The Spanish midfielder has played in a variety of positions this year including no.10, central midfield and right-wing where he is currently playing so well for the club.
Despite his wonderful form, Neville is worried about what position the Spaniard will find himself playing in.
“He can play in any position, but that’s his problem. His best position is number 10 but at every club he has been at, he’s played in every position. Now Angel Di Maria is back he has a big job to do to get Mata out of the team though.”
Mata may have had to mix his positions around a lot since joining United under David Moyes but right now he in the best form of his career at the club.
In the right wing position, he was so influential in the wins over Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and now Aston Villa and deserves all the praise he can get.
It was also the first time we saw some consistency from van Gaal in his selections and keeping Mata in that position has really brought the best out of him.
So, while Neville is right that Mata’s versatility can and may have been a hindrance to him at some point in his United career, right now van Gaal seems to have found a position for him.
