Mats Hummels is in talks with Borussia Dortmund about extending his contract at the Westfalenstadion, according to Kicker.
Hummels intensified the rumours last month by speaking of how he wanted to eventually leave the Bundesliga someday but Dortmund are not going to let their captain leave without a fight.
“We continue to plan with him,” Dortmund director Michael Zorc told German newspaper Kicker.
“We will continue our dialogue with Mats regarding our collaboration.”
Given Hummels’ flirtations with a move away from Germany in recent weeks, it comes as no surprise to see Dortmund are pushing forward with their talks.
As has been the case on more than one occasion with United in recent years, players, or at least their agents, have used United as a negotiation tool when they want a better contract at their current club.
Paris-Saint Germain defender Marquinhos has been guilty of this, as has Bayern Munich pair Thomas Muller and Dante. The hope for United fans is that it isn’t the case with Hummels.
That being said, his future at Dortmund is definitely uncertain at this stage and how they present their plans moving forward to Hummels in order to persuade him to stay will no doubt be a deciding factor in his decisions this summer.
