Louis van Gaal experimented with Rooney in midfield earlier this season for an extended period of games and it coincided with a goal drought for him.
His drought ended when he was moved back up front and he is now in a fine run of goalscoring form which included his stunning effort against Aston Villa at the weekend.
Rooney has a fantastic goalscoring record in the derby and speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville pointed out he felt the 29-year-old was now enjoying himself again.
“Wayne Rooney, that is his best position [up front], “Neville said.
“He’s proving now that he is Manchester United’s best striker, enjoying the role and scoring goals.”
Fans were under no illusion that Rooney’s best position wasn’t in midfield but van Gaal wanted to try it because at the time he didn’t trust Ander Herrera in that role.
Now Rooney has been pushed back up front, he’s playing more like his old pre-contract debacle self and United are reaping the rewards.
Going into the derby this weekend, Rooney is United’s most important player and if he can find the back of the net once again on Sunday, it would put van Gaal’s men on the front foot.
