Former Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel has urged David de Gea to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.
De Gea has so far refused to sign a new deal at Man United despite the fact he is nearing the final 12 months of his current deal at the club.
A number of reports have suggested Real Madrid are interested in the Spaniard as a replacement for the struggling Iker Casillas.
However, Schmeichel believes De Gea should sign a new deal at United in order to send a statement to fans.
Speaking about De Gea, Schmeichel said: ”It’s very important the club’s best players sign new contracts to send a signal.
“It shows that they believe in the Manchester United project and believe the club will go back not only to the top of the Premier League but also European football.
“If De Gea signs a new deal it would be a very big signal and I’m sure everyone who loves the club would love that.
“Fingers crossed he will sign another five-year contract.”
Everyone associated with the club is waiting for De Gea to sign on the dotted line but a new contract hasn’t been forthcoming. Even more worrying for fans is the 24-year-old’s silence on the subject.
Some fans have suggested that De Gea could be waiting to see if United qualify for next season’s Champions League as a player of his quality should not be missing out on it two years in a row. The club have set themselves up nicely in that respect following some good recent wins against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
