Phil Jones wants Manchester United to prioritise the result rather than the performance when they take on Manchester City this weekend.
Man United have received plaudits in recent weeks following a string of fine victories against the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, City lost 2-1 against Crystal Palace on Monday night meaning they go into the clash against United below them in the Premier League table.
Jones insisted they will not be taking the game lightly and that United are prepared to win ugly as long as they get the three points.
Speaking ahead of the game, Jones said: ”You can see the fantastic matches in these type of games, however the result is always the most important thing so maybe I hope we play ugly next week – but win.”
“Victory doesn’t last long enough. We’ve got to move on the next game. It’s nice to go into the derby, such a big game, playing well and in form. We need to turn up and make sure we put on another great performance next Sunday.
“City are still a good team. We know what they’re capable of and the threat they have going forward. They’ve got some great players in their squad but so have we. We’ve seen in the last few weeks and all season really, what sort of team we can be when we turn up and play our football. Hopefully, we can do that on Sunday as well.”
City’s loss rounded off a superb gameweek for United in which fellow top-four challengers Liverpool, Spurs and Southampton also dropped points.
Louis van Gaal’s side are in a great position to qualify for next season’s Champions League but the Dutchman will be wary his players do not take anything for granted. However, a win against City would go a long way to securing a top four spot.
