Manchester United striker Robin van Persie back in training ahead of derby

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has confirmed he is back in training and available for the derby this weekend.

The Dutchman has been out of action since injuring his ankle in the 2-1 defeat to Swansea City back in February.

Louis van Gaal will be pleased to have him return but it is unlikely he will get back in the starting XI given the form of Wayne Rooney.

Rooney had been played in midfield by van Gaal prior to van Persie’s injury but his performances became increasingly ineffectual.

Since being moved back up front, Rooney has flourished and he got on the scoresheet once again against Aston Villa last weekend.

Van Gaal has operated a policy this season where all injured players must play for the U21s to prove their fitness upon their return and it remains to be seen whether van Persie will do the same.

Regardless, it is unlikely that van Persie will be thrown into the mix against City due to the game’s importance. After the clash, van Gaal will have some decisions to make when it comes to his team selection.
