Louis van Gaal: Manchester United’s Robin van Persie not ready for derby

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed Robin van Persie is back in training but that he will not be ready for the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Van Persie has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury in the 2-1 defeat to Swansea City in February.

Even if he was fit, it is unlikely that the Dutchman would have been included in van Gaal’s starting XI.

Wayne Rooney has been playing up front in van Persie’s absence and the team have looked much better as a result.

It is a massive game this weekend and United cannot afford to have any passengers as they bid to strengthen their grip on the top four of the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Rooney will be raring to go in the match after City boss Manuel Pellegrini revealed key defender Vincent Kompany is a doubt for the game.

Van Persie will be needed in the final few games of the season so it is important that van Gaal doesn’t aggravate any lingering complaints by rushing him back into action early.
