Stuart Pearce picks awful combined Manchester XI

by Richard Laverty

Former Manchester City player and manager Stuart Pearce has picked his combined Manchester XI for the Manchester Evening News ahead of Sunday’s derby game.

Given the different forms of both City and Manchester United this season, it’s not to much of a surprise to see Pearce make a few surprise inclusions but all in all, it’s an atrocious starting XI.

Supporters will probably be pleased to know the side is made up of eight United players including a front four of Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney.

On current form, it’s not such a wild suggestion but you’d be hard pressed to find many supporters, red or blue, who would put Fellaini in a side over David Silva.

Perhaps the most baffling choice comes in goal. Pearce plumped for Joe Hart in net over David de Gea, a player who could make a reasonable argument to be voted player of the season next month.

Antonio Valencia, Mr. Makeshift right-back, being ahead of Pablo Zabaleta is an equally atrocious decision. Daley Blind fills in at left-back despite having only played there a handful of times this season. Phil Jones is in at centre-back despite an injury hit season and despite impressive form, Michael Carrick has also only played a handful of matches lately.

Whilst some choices are understandable on form, it’s probably for the best if Pearce stays away from management for the foreseeable future…
