The 29-year-old has become one of van Gaal’s most important players this season and his man of the match performance against Manchester City at the weekend was the latest in a string of fine performances.
Young has almost certainly done enough to earn a new contract but it might come as something of a surprise to see him given a new three-year deal given that it would take him through until he was 32.
Reports further suggest Young will take a cut on his current £120,000 a week contract and would make up the difference in bonuses. The idea of cutting his wages after what has been a fantastic year seems harsh on the surface but he should never have been on those wages in the first place.
At the end of last season, Man United fans would have told you there was no way Young would have a long term future at the club but coming into the tail end of this season, his form suggests he could be a staple part of van Gaal’s squad.
