Player Ratings: Manchester United 4-2 Manchester City: Young, Fellaini & Mata the stars

by Richard Laverty

David de Gea 7 Could do nothing about the opener and made a valiant attempt at the second, made a good save early on from Navas.

Antonio Valencia 7 Definitely one of his better performances, made some vital defensive interceptions, particularly when United were 2-1 up. Good performance.

Chris Smalling 7 United’s defence was a bit all over the place at times but did really well overall and got a goal to top things off.

Phil Jones 7 Also solid, few hairy moments as ever but did well throughout. Got a great reception when replaced by Rojo.

Daley Blind 6 He struggled early on but played a big role in United’s second and grew into the game later on.

Michael Carrick 7 Marshalled the game as usual. Lost Silva early on but took control as United dominated. Hopefully his injury isn’t a worry.

Ander Herrera 8 Very impressive once again from Herrera. Linked beautifully with Mata and the rest of the team, assisted the opener.

Marouane Fellaini 8 Another brilliant performance from the big man. Scored the second to put United ahead and caused City problems all day.

Juan Mata 8 Superb. Such a revelation since coming into the game, couldn’t have looked any cooler running through to make it 3. A brilliant performance.

Wayne Rooney 6 Not the captain’s finest afternoon but he worked his socks off and played Mata in for the third. He’ll be as happy as anyone.

Ashley Young 9 Man of the match. Scored the first, assisted two more and continued his superb form. A huge revelation under Van Gaal.

Substitutes

Marcos Rojo 5 Was brought on for Jones and had little to do. Has competition for his place.

Angel Di Maria 6 Looked lively when coming on, ran at City and caused them issues late on.

Radamel Falcao 5 Had little to do but held the ball well and got in good positions. Fans happy to see him on as always.
