Manchester United will offer Javier Hernandez to Southampton in an attempt to prise Nathaniel Clyne away from St Mary’s, according to ESPN.
Clyne is nearing the final year of his contract at Southampton but has reportedly turned down offers of an extension.
The 24-year-old recently admitted that he wants to play Champions League football, leading to rumours that he could join Man United.
Chelsea are also said to be keen on Clyne, who has established himself as England’s first-choice right-back this season.
Jose Mourinho has sent scouts to watch the defender on a number of occasions but United are hopeful that Hernandez can sweeten the deal in their discussions with Southampton.
Hernandez moved to Real Madrid on loan last summer but his time in Spain has been hugely frustrating due to a lack of playing time.
Should the deal come off, it would be a great one as far as United fans are concerned. On the one hand, Hernandez, a crowd favourite, would get some regular minutes on the pitch. On the other, United’s squad would be strengthened considerably by Clyne.
