Ever since Paul Scholes retired, a natural central midfielder with guile has been missing from Manchester United’s midfield.
Ander Herrera has changed that since his arrival from Athletic Bilbao in the summer. The popular Spaniard had to bide his time before getting into Louis van Gaal‘s starting XI but has been in such fantastic form recently that he is now one of the first names on the team-sheet.
There’s lots to admire about Herrera’s style of play which is so typical of Spanish midfielders but his ability to find and create space is certainly one of his best assets.
This fantastic compilation video really shows how Herrera naturally touches the ball into space and can give himself an extra few yards on an opposition player which he uses so effectively.
It’s a small thing from Herrera but is indicative of how he thinks. He is always a step ahead, thinking of what he can do next before having the ball at his feet which is exactly how Scholes played.
At the moment, United are playing some of their best football in two years and Herrera’s right at the heart of it all. He might have had to settle for cameo appearances at the start of his United career but only a few months later he has taken centre stage.
