Chris Smalling signs new Manchester United contract

Chris Smalling has signed a new contract at Manchester United which will tie him down to the club until at least June 2019.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in form under the guidance of Louis van Gaal and has rightly been rewarded with a new deal.

The news will end speculation that Arsenal were set to launch a bid for Smalling at the end of the campaign.

Smalling has been excellent in recent games against the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool and fans will be delighted to hear about his new contract.

The low point of the Englishman’s season came in the Manchester derby earlier this month, when he was sent off for picking up a second yellow card following a rash challenge on James Milner.

However, from then on he has gone from strength to strength, gradually establishing himself as one of United’s most important defensive players.

Van Gaal has shown during his time at United that he can improve anyone if they have the right attitude. Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young also have the Dutchman to thank as they have gone through similarly impressive runs of form.
