Ronald de Boer: Manchester United have ‘advantage’ in Memphis Depay race

by Ben Topliss

Former Netherlands midfielder Ronald de Boer believes Manchester United have an “advantage” in the race to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay because of Louis van Gaal.

Depay is considered to be one of the most exciting young talents in world football having scored 20 goals in 27 Eredivisie appearances this season.

As well as Man United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are all said to be interested in the 21-year-old.

De Boer is excited about Depay’s potential and insisted that his relationship with van Gaal gives United the edge when it comes to signing him.

Speaking about Depay, de Boer said: “He is one of the biggest talents in Europe.

“He has skill compared to a young Cristiano Ronaldo. He is very lively, technically unbelievable, very skilful, very fast, he has a great goalscoring record, he can shoot from every distance – he has everything.

“For me, he is without doubt one of the best talents we [Netherlands] have.

“I don’t want to say which club is more suitable for him, but if he goes to United he knows there is a Dutch coach there who knows him from the World Cup. That is an advantage.”

Van Gaal is said to be something of a father figure to Depay which will fill fans with confidence when the transfer window opens.

The 63-year-old got the best out of Depay at the 2014 World Cup and the midfielder was eventually nominated for the tournament’s Best Young Player award. All the signs are pointing towards his arrival at Old Trafford next summer, with Bayern’s rumoured interest being the only stumbling block. Hopefully, Depay will prefer to link up with van Gaal once again.
