Iker Casillas rules out Real Madrid exit even if he loses first-team place

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has declared he would not leave the club even if he lost his position as their first-choice goalkeeper.

Casillas’ form has come under increasing scrutiny this season following some increasingly indifferent performances.

Meanwhile, Madrid have been strongly linked with Manchester United’s David de Gea, who is widely regarded as the best keeper in the world right now.

Casillas insisted he will see out his contract at Madrid even if he loses his spot in the starting XI.

Speaking about his situation, Casillas said: ”I hope to fulfil my contract and a commitment that is signed has to be signed until the end. But I have to earn it and train myself for it. I will strive and I will fight for the position.

“Now I am at an age at which things are seen in a different way so, if I am not the starter, I will have a commitment with the younger ones.

“Why wouldn’t I continue at Madrid if I am not the starting goalkeeper?”

The comments will be worrying for Man United fans as it suggests that Casillas is preparing himself for De Gea’s arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid’s tactic of publicly unsettling players before making their move has seen them sign the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in the past and they appear to be doing the same when it comes to De Gea.

The 24-year-old’s silence on the matter has been deafening and it is looking increasingly unlikely that he will sign a new contract at United. Despite this, fans are clinging onto the hope that De Gea is simply waiting for the side to qualify for the Champions League.
