Paul McGrath hails ‘incredible’ Paddy McNair performance against Chelsea

by Ben Topliss

Former Manchester United defender Paul McGrath has hailed the “incredible” Paddy McNair following his performance against Chelsea last weekend.

Louis van Gaal was forced to turn to the 19-year-old following injuries to Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.

McNair stepped up to the plate and put in a fantastic display which earned him a number of plaudits for largely keeping Chelsea’s attacking talents at bay.

Although Man United eventually lost the game 1-0, McGrath was impressed with McNair’s showing along with his composure on the ball.

Speaking about McNair, McGrath said: “I thought he was incredible against Chelsea. He showed a maturity level that I would never have shown at that age. If a space opens up in front of you as a defender and you know you’re quick enough to go through it without getting caught, then you should go through it.

“He did that a few times at Chelsea and even tested Courtois with a shot. He seems to be very comfortable with the ball at his feet.”

McNair has shown on a number of occasions this season that he can be relied upon which will fill van Gaal with confidence heading into next season.

United have long been linked with the likes of Mats Hummels but it is not too far-fetched to say that McNair could make the step up to that next level in the coming years. Having also made his international debut for Northern Ireland this term, the youngster is going a long way to establishing himself as a top-class defender.
