Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze have both joined Bayern Munich from arch rivals Borussia Dortmund in recent years and it has most certainly had a knock-on effect on their strained relationship.
Now, Bild.de are reporting that the German champions are considering making another move for one of their stars this summer, something which would infuriate the Dortmund fans.
The sales of Lewandowski and Gotze were out of Dortmund’s hands thanks to contracts and release clauses but having secured a new contract with Marco Reus, who could Bayern be looking at? There are two players who may well be on their radar – Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels.
The former has been linked to Bayern for a long time and very strong reports from Germany about a deal for Man United being on the cards may well have forced their interest, which would no doubt please Gundogan’s representatives as it gives them better grounds to negotiate with.
As for Hummels, he has a strong affinity with Bayern having spent his whole youth career and early senior years there. That being said, he is now captain of Dortmund, so he’s got deep ties with both clubs.
United’s interest in both players is well documented but any interest from Bayern could very easily scupper moves for either for sure. After all, Bayern have just won the Bundesliga, are in the German cup semi-final and the UEFA Champions League final.
