Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas believes Manchester United should make Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale their top summer transfer target.
Bale is going through a tough season in Spain and has regularly been booed by his own fans.
Meanwhile, Man United’s recent six-game winning streak ended with back-to-back defeats to Chelsea and Everton over the last few weekends, raising suggestions that the club need to strengthen their squad when the transfer window opens.
Nicholas insisted that the signing of Bale would make a statement as United prepare to return to the Champions League.
When asked where United should strengthen, Nicholas said: ”If you want to make a serious statement, then you need to throw everything at getting Gareth Bale.
“He’s the sort of player that can create a massive excitement and help United make an immediate impact when they return to the Champions League.
“I think Bale would be open to returning to the Premier League, even if he wouldn’t say it.
“United can say to him, ‘you’ve been successful in Spain winning the Champions League but after your ups and downs, you can come here and be our Ronaldo, rather than playing second fiddle’.”
Bale would be a fantastic addition for United and one that would go a long way to making them Premier League title challengers once again but there’s no doubt van Gaal would have to smash the £59.7m club transfer record to sign him.
There’d also be questions to ask as to whether United would have space in the squad for both Bale and Memphis Depay, meaning van Gaal may have to choose between them if push came to shove.
