Former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman believes Manchester United are “£150m away” from winning the Premier League title.
Louis van Gaal’s side endured a difficult first half of the campaign but they seemed to put their problems behind them with a recent six-game winning streak.
However, defeats against Chelsea and Everton have once again raised suggestions that Man United need to strengthen their squad in the summer.
McManaman insisted United are nowhere near winning the league and that he has been disappointed with the way they have played this season.
Speaking about United, McManaman said: “I think they are miles away, £150m away from winning the title.
“I have been disappointed with the way they have played. I think the fact that they played so well against Liverpool and Tottenham has rescued them.
“I expected them to play much better and be closer, as in they have never ever been anywhere near challenging for the title this year.
“They have got a little bit closer at the end of the season as other teams have tailed off.
“So I expected them to be closer playing a better standard of football. To have no European football this year has helped them considerably.”
United undoubtedly need to bring some quality in when the transfer window opens but McManaman is going a bit overboard with his comments.
Van Gaal has brought the best out of players such as Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young and wins against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City have shown that United are more than capable of beating the big teams. Two or three quality additions are needed but a complete overhaul is unnecessary.
