Manchester United confident of agreeing David de Gea contract worth £200,000 a week – report

Manchester United are confident that David de Gea will sign a new contract and reports suggest the goalkeeper has been offered a £200,000 a week deal, reports The Independent’s Ian Herbert.

De Gea’s future has been a point of concern for Man United fans all season because his superb form has been crucial in the chase for a top four spot.

Real Madrid have been heavily linked with a move for De Gea and will no doubt continue to chase the 24-year-old Madrid born goalkeeper but the suggestion from Ian Herbert now is that United are confident that a deal will be agreed to keep him at Old Trafford.

He’d become one of United’s top earners if a £200,000 a week deal was agreed and would deserve every penny of it. He is already one of the best goalkeepers in the world and is only going to get better, so United tying him to a new contract is just as important as any new signing this season.

It has been a long process with De Gea’s contract this season and although van Gaal has confirmed the Spaniard has been offered a lot of money, he is well aware of the power De Gea has in his own choice.

“It takes a long time now,” Van Gaal said when asked about De Gea’s contract negotiations.

“It can always happen, but I am not the boss. The player is the boss and he can say yes or no.I want him to stay, but you will have to ask David De Gea, not me. He has to sign, but we have offered him a lot of money.”

Whatever it takes, United need to give it to De Gea. Goalkeepers of his ilk are a rare commodity and while the lure of a return to Madrid may prove too strong at one stage in his career, that doesn’t have to be this summer.

With Champions League football looking all but secured and another big investment expected in the transfer window, United are going to be a force to reckon with next year and keeping De Gea to be part of that is crucial
