Valdes arrived at Old Trafford in the winter transfer window but is yet to play a single minute for the first-team.
Instead, De Gea has continued his sensational form for Man United, prompting strong interest from European champions Real Madrid.
MailOnline’s Adam Crafton spoke to a former coach of Valdes and he suggested that the 33-year-old may have been aware of a transfer for De Gea to Madrid when he joined United.
Speaking about the situation, the coach said: “Valdes is incredibly competitive and determined. He’s not going to sit on the bench for 18 months.
“The fact he hasn’t played a single minute for United yet and he hasn’t complained would suggest to me that he knows something we don’t.”
Van Gaal ramped up the pressure on De Gea last week by admitting that United had offered him a lot of money to stay at Old Trafford but the player’s silence on the subject has been telling.
Valdes would more than likely start for any other team in the world so it is not hard to imagine he joined the club eventually believing that he would become No.1. The loss of De Gea would be a bitter pill to swallow for United fans but Valdes would be an excellent replacement.
