It’s been quite the week for Ilkay Gundogan.
Following reports from Germany which said he was going to join Manchester United, everything went into overdrive.
The official stance from Borussia Dortmund was to deny all claims about Gundogan but after he was left out from their matchday squad that weekend with a ‘sore throat’, suspicious eyebrows were raised everywhere.
In the next game Gundogan returned and scored in the dramatic penalty shoot-out against Bayern Munich to earn a place in the DFB Pokal final.
Now, less than seven days after the original story from Der Westen said Gundogan was joining United, Dortmund have confirmed he will not be signing a contract extension past his current deal which expires in 2016.
Following that announcement, Der Westen have followed it up with a new report reiterating that same stance.
According to their editors, Gundogan will join United and they quote a market value of €20m but say United are willing to pay up to €30m, which seems an awful lot for a midfielder with one year left on his contract and a long injury record.
What’s next for Gundogan? Now the news is out that he will not be signing a contract extension, it boils down to what Dortmund want to do. If they are willing to let him leave on a free, they could keep him until June 2016 but the more realistic option is that he leaves the German club this summer for a fee.
We’re going to keep on top of this Gundogan story and bring you all the latest developments when they happen. Given how much movement there has been in the last week with his future, we’re expecting to keep developing quickly.
