The news that Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will not be renewing his contract at the Westfalenstadion could spark a bidding war between Europe’s top clubs.
Reports last week suggested that Gundogan had already agreed a deal with Manchester United to join them in the summer but the club has since denied this.
Man United look to be the favourites for his signature despite the denial but Bayern Munich are also said to be vying for his services.
The news got plenty of United fans excited:
Watch Gundogan sign for Bayern. Don't get too giddy.

I fully expect United to leak Gundogan soon as United mathematical secure Champions League football.

Dortmund have a proper say in this deal, you think they'll sell to their domestic rivals over a foreign club!?! #Gundogan

At this point, I'd imagine Dortmund would rather drink acid than sell another player to Bayern, so maybe selling Gundogan asap makes sense.

Everything points to Gundogan moving to United, given the options to both himself and Dortmund. Reasonable price too.

Bayern have stolen Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze from Dortmund in recent years so it would be unsurprising if the club were not willing to negotiate with them again.
All signs are pointing to Gundogan’s arrival at Old Trafford but fans have been stung before following protracted transfer sagas.
Even last summer, it looked like United were close to signing Juventus’ Arturo Vidal but a deal never materialised. However, it will be difficult for fans to not get excited as Gundogan has proven that he is a world-class talent.
