Memphis Depay’s move to the Premier League is ‘99.9%’ done says PSV’s ex-assistant coach

PSV’s ex-assistant coach Frank Arnesen says Memphis Depay‘s move to the Premier League is ‘99.9% per cent’ done.

Arnesen, who also previously played for PSV, was asked to give his views on Depay’s future this week amid continued rumours linking him with moves to both Manchester United and Liverpool.

He backed Depay to be a big success in the Premier League but warned any potential suitor not to expect too much straight away due to the step up in quality from the Eredivisie

“For me, it’s 99.9 per cent,” Arnesen said when asked about whether Depay would move to the Premier League.

“Yes, he will [be a success]. I’ve seen him many times this season and he is going from strength to strength, even though he’s only 21 years old.

“It’s difficult to stop him. It will of course take time because it’s totally different than in Eredivisie.

“The level is so much higher here, playing much more games, so he needs to be protected.

“Don’t expect too much in the beginning but he’s definitely the big talent and he’ll be good in the Premier League

“I don’t know where he wants to go. I’ve seen a lot of players coming into the Premier League from Holland who didn’t achieve because the level is so high in the Premier League, but Depay can do very well.”

Although the likes of Luis Suarez and Ruud van Nistelrooy thrived in the Premier League transition, there have been plenty of examples such as Mateja Kezman who joined Chelsea having scored 105 goals in 122 appearances for PSV but made less than 30 appearances for the London club before being sold.

Depay has torn up the Eredivisie this year and is rightly considered one of Europe’s most talented young players but as Arnesen rightly says, there is every chance he’ll need some time to settle in at whatever club he joins.
