PSV technical director Marcel Brands has told FOX Sports in Holland that both Liverpool and Paris St Germain are ahead of Manchester United in the pursuit of Memphis Depay this summer.
Man United have been linked with Depay ever since his strong performances at the World Cup last summer under Louis van Gaal‘s stewardship and following the winger’s stunning season with PSV where his goals steered them to the Eredivisie title, rumours have gathered in pace.
Although United are considered a strong candidate for Depay’s signature, Brands says Liverpool and PSG are closer to signing him.
“PSG and Liverpool are indeed a step ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Memphis,” he said.
“United have only informed us about their interest.
“The list of interested clubs has grown in recent weeks. But Bayern Munich are not among the teams that want to sign him.
“It’s only logical that there is a lot of movement around Memphis. He is still a young player, but is already hugely efficient. He should be proud of that.
“There isn’t usually a lot of movement in the transfer market at this stage of the season. It’s an exception that so many clubs have already shown an interest in Memphis.
“That only illustrates that he’s on the right track.”
It is in PSV’s best interest if clubs are involved in a bidding war for Depay so it doesn’t come as a surprise to hear them generating more interest.
That being said, Brand’s comments do tie in to reports which suggest United are more keen on signing Bale so are delaying their pursuit of Depay for the time being.
As has been the case with United in recent years, there is rarely a straightforward new signing and the way this Depay story is shaping up, it could become another saga.
